As our business has grown, so too has our understanding of how travellers like to explore South Africa. We’ve recognised that many guests on self-drive holidays aren’t necessarily looking for a traditional 4×4. Instead, they’re seeking a budget-friendly, flexible rental option that still delivers comfort, practicality, and peace of mind — particularly on classic routes that include some gravel and dirt-road driving.
With this in mind, we’re excited to introduce a new vehicle category at Tread Lite — our Cross-Country rental — built around a carefully adapted Suzuki Grand Vitara. This marks a natural next step in the Tread Lite journey.
It brings the same trusted philosophy behind our Jimny setups into a compact SUV platform, offering a unique cross-country travel option for couples and families who don’t need low-range capability, but still want a reliable, comfortable vehicle with thoughtfully included equipment to enhance their journey through South Africa.
The result is a vehicle that offers the flexibility of included equipment, sensible ground clearance, and all-terrain tyres — without stepping into a full 4×4 category.

The Grand Vitara joins our fleet with two carefully considered configurations, each designed to offer simplicity, comfort, and excellent value.
Partially Equipped – More Than a Standard Rental
This option is ideal for travellers who aren’t planning to do any camping but want a more capable, comfortable road-trip vehicle which includes a range of equipment options to further enhance their road trip to South Africa.
Included as standard:
Roof box for extra luggage space. This is ideal if you are a family with children in the back and you want to keep some of your luggage out of the vehicle. With a carrying capacity of 50kg, there is enough space for those extra items.
Fridge to keep food and drinks cold on long travel days. Travelling with a fridge may not be common practice for our international visitors but having cold storage in the vehicle while travelling in our warm climate helps keep the essentials cold while on the road.
Picnic setup for roadside lunches and scenic stops. Another great value add, especially when visiting our national parks like the Kruger National Park where there are beautiful picnic sites waiting to be enjoyed.
All-terrain tyres for added confidence on gravel and park roads. We’ve added the all-terrain tyres to give our travellers confidence to explore the sand roads and dirt track mountain passes where vehicles with good ground clearance can travel.
This setup offers far more than a conventional rental car, especially for routes where space, visibility and reliability matter. It’s perfectly suited to families or couples staying in lodges, guesthouses, or self-catering accommodation.
Fully Equipped – A Lite Camping Setup with a Difference
For travellers looking to camp without the cost or complexity of a full 4×4, the fully equipped Grand Vitara offers something genuinely different. We have taken our fully equipped Jimny rental setup and adapted it for the Grand Vitara, allowing travellers to enjoy the camping without having to rent a 4×4.
