Our Family Safari to Mjejane River Lodge
Exploring the Kruger & Mjejane River Lodge Through an Eight-Year-Old’s Eyes
One of the things we’re most excited about at Tread Lite is expanding our range of family-friendly self-drive adventures.
Since the addition of our GWM Tank 300 and the Suzuki Grand Vitara to the fleet, we’re seeing more families looking for comfortable, flexible safari experiences that combine the freedom of self-drive travel with a touch of luxury along the way. As part of that journey, we’re making a point of personally visiting the lodges and destinations we recommend, allowing us to share genuine first-hand experiences with our travellers.
With a vehicle delivery scheduled from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, I took the opportunity to bring my eight-year-old son, Aiden, along for a short Kruger adventure during his school holidays. We decided to spend the night at Mjejane River Lodge, and it reminded me why we love introducing families to the magic of the South African bush.
Kruger Route – Numbi Gate to Malelane Gate
Having completed our vehicle delivery—we had handed one of our 5-door Jimnys over to a family from Cape Town who were heading into the park for a week-long self-drive—we decided to take the scenic route through the Kruger National Park rather than driving directly to the lodge.
In my opinion, self-driving through the Kruger is one of the best ways to experience the park. You can explore at your own pace, spend as much or as little time at each sighting as you wish, stop for coffee or lunch at one of the many picnic sites or dams, and simply soak it all in.
We enjoyed several lovely sightings, including a young hyena pup resting beside the road, which was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the drive. It was the perfect reminder that some of the most memorable wildlife encounters aren’t always the biggest or the rarest—they’re often the unexpected moments that happen when you slow down and enjoy the journey.
A Warm Welcome on the Banks of the Crocodile River
Leaving the Kruger through Malelane Gate, it was a short and easy drive into the Mjejane Game Reserve. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel incredibly welcome.
The team at Mjejane River Lodge were genuinely warm, friendly and attentive, creating the kind of relaxed atmosphere that immediately allows you to slow down and settle into safari mode.
The lodge enjoys an exceptional position overlooking the Crocodile River, one of the southern boundaries of the Kruger National Park. From both the main lodge and the guest chalets, the views across the river are simply spectacular. Sitting on the deck watching wildlife move along the riverbank is an experience in itself and makes this a wonderful place to unwind either before or after exploring the Kruger.
Safari Through an Eight-Year-Old’s Eyes
One of the highlights of travelling with Aiden is seeing the bush through his eyes.
Our afternoon game drive was filled with wonderful sightings, including elephants, buffalo, a baby giraffe and several species of antelope. While the wildlife sightings were excellent, what excited him just as much were the birds.
After finding a notebook in the lodge’s small gift shop, he spent the rest of the trip recording everything he spotted. A kingfisher, a Crested Barbet and, perhaps most exciting of all, a Ground Hornbill all made it onto his growing bird list, complete with little sketches alongside each sighting.
Watching that excitement and curiosity develop reminded me that family safaris aren’t always about chasing the Big Five. Sometimes they’re about creating memories, learning together and discovering a lifelong appreciation for nature.
We’re fortunate to spend time in the bush several times each year, but no two trips are ever the same. For Aiden, this was another opportunity to discover the incredible wildlife and landscapes that make South Africa so special.
Comfortable Lodge Accommodation for Families
Our chalet was spacious, modern and beautifully appointed. Aiden’s favourite features were the indoor and outdoor showers, while I appreciated the generous living space, comfortable bed and private balcony overlooking the surrounding bushveld. The room also featured a lovely bathroom with a bath, making it an ideal choice for families wanting to relax after a day of exploring.
It strikes a wonderful balance between luxury and comfort without ever feeling overly formal.
Excellent Food Throughout Our Stay
The dining experience was another highlight. Dinner was beautifully prepared, with my beef curry and potato bake being a particular standout, while Aiden declared the breakfast bacon to be one of the best parts of the entire trip.
The meals felt generous, fresh and thoughtfully prepared, adding to the overall feeling that this is a lodge where guests are genuinely looked after.
An Ideal Introduction to a Kruger Safari
Mjejane Game Reserve covers approximately 4,000 hectares and shares an unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park, separated by the Crocodile River. Wildlife moves freely between the reserve and the Kruger National Park, creating excellent game-viewing opportunities throughout the area. The guided safari offers an excellent introduction to the African bush, particularly for first-time visitors or families wanting to experience the insight and knowledge of a professional guide before beginning their own self-drive adventure. For those wanting even more flexibility, guests can also explore the Kruger National Park independently during their stay, combining guided experiences with the freedom of discovering the park at their own pace.
Perfectly Positioned for Self-Drive Travellers
One of the things we particularly like about Mjejane River Lodge is its location.
It’s an easy drive from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, making it an ideal first or last stop on a self-drive itinerary. This makes it particularly convenient for international visitors wanting to ease into their safari before beginning a longer self-drive journey.
Guests can collect their Tread Lite vehicle, enjoy a relaxed drive to the lodge, settle into safari life with a professionally guided game drive, and then continue into the Kruger National Park and beyond with confidence. It’s a gentle introduction to safari that removes the pressure of trying to find wildlife on your own from the very first afternoon.

Our Thoughts
At Tread Lite, we believe that the best recommendations come from personal experience. Our stay at Mjejane River Lodge confirmed why it has become one of the properties we’re proud to recommend. Between the exceptional riverside setting, welcoming staff, comfortable accommodation and family-friendly atmosphere, it offers everything needed for a memorable start or finish to a South African safari.
Perhaps the best endorsement came from Aiden, who left with pages of wildlife notes, bird sketches and stories that he’ll remember for years to come. If you’re planning your own self-drive safari through the Kruger region, we’d love to help you build an itinerary that includes Mjejane River Lodge.
