Our compact travel setups have helped countless travellers explore South Africa and Southern Africa in a way that feels easy, flexible and well prepared — without overpacking or overcomplicating the journey.
Now, we are excited to introduce the GWM Tank 300 to our fleet, bringing the same Tread Lite approach to family self-drive adventures.
The Tank 300 is a modern, capable and comfortable 4×4 that gives families the extra space and confidence they need for longer road trips, camping holidays and Southern African self-drive itineraries. It offers a great balance between everyday comfort and proper adventure capability, making it ideal for families who want to explore beyond the usual routes without compromising on safety or convenience.
Inside, the Tank 300 feels spacious and refined, with excellent visibility and a comfortable driving position. For families of up to four people, there is plenty of room for everyone to travel comfortably, with enough space for children, luggage and the essential travel gear that makes a road trip feel easy. Modern safety and comfort features such as airbags, adaptive cruise control, lane assist and other driver support systems add peace of mind, especially on longer distances.
One of the reasons we have added the Tank 300 is that it fits perfectly into the way many of our travellers like to explore: travelling lite, but properly prepared. The boot space works well for families who pack sensibly, and with a little Tread Lite thinking, there is room for everything you need and nothing you don’t. For added flexibility, a roof box can be fitted to create extra luggage space, allowing guests to carry useful travel items such as a fridge, kitchen box, chairs and other essentials for a true Tread Lite self-drive experience.
Tread Lite Equipped setup for your family
For families wanting to camp, we have adapted our compact camping rental setup from the Suzuki Jimny and reworked it for the Tank 300. The result is a practical and comfortable family camping setup that includes a spacious, easy-pitch ground tent, stretchers and the necessary equipment for a relaxed stay. Optional value-adds such as groundsheets and an awning can also be included, helping create a more comfortable camp setup for longer stays or slower travel days.
For guests who prefer lodges, guesthouses or family-friendly accommodation rather than camping, the Tank 300 is just as useful. The roof box creates extra room for luggage, while the vehicle can still be equipped with practical travel items such as a fridge, kitchen essentials and outdoor gear. It is a flexible option for families who want the comfort of accommodation with the freedom and independence of a well-prepared self-drive vehicle.
Travel Routes and Capability
The Tank 300 also brings impressive 4×4 capability, making it well suited to gravel roads, game reserves, mountain passes and adventure-focused routes across South Africa and beyond. With a 70-litre fuel tank, longer travel distances are easier to manage, giving families more confidence when exploring remote areas or planning multi-day self-drive trips.
It is especially well suited to the kind of self-drive routes we love building for our guests. It is comfortable enough for the long tar sections between destinations, but capable enough when the road gets more interesting. For families exploring Kruger and the Greater Kruger region, it offers great visibility, comfort and space for game-viewing days. For more adventurous routes, it is a confident option for areas such as Sani Pass, the Drakensberg, northern KwaZulu-Natal and the sandy coastal roads of Southern Mozambique. These are the kinds of places where a well-prepared 4×4 adds real value — not because the journey needs to be difficult, but because the vehicle gives you the confidence to travel further, slow down and enjoy the experience.
