Detailed Self-Drive Itinerary

Day 1-3: A full outdoor experience

Arriving in Cape Town, your adventure starts in De Hoop Nature Reserve, where you will be staying in a fully equipped cottage. The De Hoop Nature Reserve is one of the Western Cape’s largest and most beautiful nature sanctuaries offering you a full outdoor experience by the coast including fynbos and the surrounding mountains. Perfect for birdwatching, and a ‘Bucket List‘ visit to the Cape Vulture colony (the only surviving colony in the Western Cape situated on the Potberg Mountain in the Reserve) is a must.

Day 3-5: Elephant Hide of Knysna

Departing from the De Hoop Nature Reserve, your self-drive adventure continues to the tranquil Elephant Hide of Knysna Guest House. Situated on top of a cliff overlooking the Knysna lagoon, you’ll be surrounded by natural beauty and mountainous views. Take in the spectacular sunsets sipping on a sundowner on the pool deck or enjoy the cooler nights in the dining room by the fireplace overlooking the lagoon.

Day 5-6: A historical stay in the heart of Baviaanskloof

Next a stay in the Landhuis, a 150-year-old beautifully restored building and a historical landmark of the Kamerkloof and the Baviaanskloof Hartland. Appreciate the history of this landmark and its authentic interior including its original Oregon ceilings and floors. Wake up to the unbelievable views of the Baviaanskloof and Kouga Mountains and olive orchards. Warm days can be spent cooling off in the swimming pool or taking in the views on the viewing deck.

Day 6-8: Addo Elephant National Park

Your safari awaits at the renowned Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape, one of South Africa’s most picturesque parks and the third largest national park in South Africa. Great bird watching is possible while on a safari and of course, this will be your best chance of spotting the Big-Five. Accommodation is at Elephant House, a Cape-style cottage with private stoeps overlooking 5 acres of rolling lawns.

Day 8-10: Costal retreat in Coffee Bay

Located along South Africa’s rugged eastern coast, Coffee Bay is the perfect way to kick back and relax. Here you can enjoy long walks on beautiful white sand beaches, spectacular sunsets and rich local culture. If you are feeling more energetic, hiking, surfing, kayaking, and fishing awaits. This small friendly costal community provides a unique experience in itself with an alternative lifestyle and an authentic taste for rural South Africa.

Day 10-11: Peaceful farmlands

After a relaxing time at the coast, it’s time to head inland to KarMichael Farm, a working farm located at the foot of the Drakensberg mountains. A peaceful place where you can unwind and enjoy the superb views of Lesotho. Explore the vast farmlands and the two freshwater dams on the property. Bushman rock art tours, trail running, and fly fishing are some of the other activities you can enjoy in the surrounding area.

Day 11-12: Scaling Sani Pass

A road where only 4×4’s dare to navigate, the famous Sani Mountain Pass is sure to be an adventure! Your overnight stop at Sani Mountain Lodge gives you the chance to enjoy a meal at the highest pub in Africa overlooking the valley below. Departure is on day 12 as arranged with Tread Lite, leaving only your memories behind.
